Building a Culture of Accessibility at Your Library Online

Accessibility is an important part of your library’s service commitment, but perhaps you do not know where to begin with making your library more accessible.  Maybe you are unsure of what to prioritize or how to get community buy-in for undertaking this work!  Join this session to meet with the former NYU Libraries’ Accessibility & Accommodations Librarian, Lauren Kehoe, who will share her approach to building a culture of accessibility at NYU Libraries.  The session will cover topics such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how it influences your library services, spaces, and resources; disability justice frameworks; universal design; and some practical tips for how to begin prioritizing accessibility in your library work.

Lauren Kehoe is the Head of Research Engagement at the University of Central Florida where she plays a leading role in developing and implementing innovative solutions for the Academic Engagement Division within the UCF Libraries. Previously, she held the position of Accessibility & Accommodations Librarian at New York University Libraries. She holds a BA in Dramatic Literature & Cinema Studies, MLIS, and MA in Digital Humanities. She is an advocate for more accessible facilities, services, and resources within libraries. She accomplishes this through direct support of students with disabilities, advocacy, collaboration within and without libraries, and professional development support to her colleagues.

This session is part of our yearlong Room for Everyone series of programs supporting library accessibility. To view all the programs in this series, please view the Accessibility programs on our event calendar.

The New York State Library’s services, programs, and collections are made possible through federal Library Service and Technology Act funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This webinar will be recorded for later viewing by those unable to attend live; to receive the recording link, please register and it will be automatically sent to you. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to Tor Loney at tor.loney@nysed.gov
